Starts exploring Roluos’s ancient temples, including Lo Lei, Preah Ko, and Bakong. Some of the earliest Khmer permanent constructions are those three temples at Roluos. They date back to the late 9th century, which is the commencement of the classical period of Khmer civilization. Some were constructed entirely out of bricks, while others had a combination of brick and other materials like laterite or sandstone.
From Roluos, continue driving out into the beautiful Cambodian countryside to reach the temples of Banteay Srei. Banteay Srei, also known as the Women’s Temple, is believed to have been a military academy where women were trained to fight in battle. It is unusual in that it was built out of stunning pink sandstone and adorned with hand-carved details.
The Cambodia Landmine Museum is a must-see on the way back, with its astounding collection of thousands of land mines. Even more remarkable is the fact that one Khmer guy, Mr. Aki Ra, disarmed most of these mines by himself. Climbing to the top of Phnom Bakheng hilltop temple or Pre Rup-temple will reward you with a breathtaking overview and a wonderful sunset.
