From 1954 until the defeat of the Americans in 1975, Ben Hai River marked the division of Vietnam. The area extended 5km from either side of the river was declared a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) – a stark contrast to what really took place in this region. In fact, The DMZ was the scene of some of the heaviest and most bitter fighting during the Vietnam War in the sixties and seventies. Camp Carroll, the Rock pile, KheSanh, Hamburger Hill, Con Tien and A Shau Valley are names which still evoke emotions from the American public.
