Why Vietnam is a year-round cruise destination.
Vietnam stretches over 1,600 kilometres from north to south, and its climate is shaped by two monsoon systems. The result is simple but counter-intuitive: when it is raining in one part of Vietnam, it is almost always dry in another.
For cruisers, this is good news. It means there is no single “best” month for the whole country — but there is almost always a good month for the specific water you want to be on.
The main cruise regions to think about are Northern Vietnam (Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay), Central Vietnam (coastal cruises, the Perfume River in Hue, day boats around Hoi An and Da Nang), Southern Vietnam (the Mekong Delta, the Saigon River), and Phu Quoc and the southern islands for island-hopping. Each one has its own window.
Best time to cruise Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay.
October to November and March to April are the two finest windows for a bay cruise in northern Vietnam. These shoulder seasons bring mild, clear weather, calm water, and far fewer boats.
October – November
The summer rains have passed, typhoon risk has dropped, and skies are at their clearest. The afternoon light on the limestone karsts is warm and golden — the conditions photographers hope for. Water is calm, which matters for kayaking and swimming.
Best for: photography, clear skies, kayaking, calm anchoragesMarch – April
The weather warms up after winter, the haze clears, and the bay is at its most comfortable for spending full days on deck. Spring is also a good time to combine a bay cruise with Hanoi or Ninh Binh before or after.
Best for: full days on deck, combining with Hanoi and Ninh BinhDecember – February
Cooler than most travellers expect. Hanoi can drop to 10–15°C, and Halong Bay feels chilly on the water. The bay is often misty — beautiful and atmospheric, but visibility for photography is limited. Bring layers for mornings and evenings.
Best for: quiet travel, atmospheric mist, low-season pricesJune – August
The riskiest months for a Halong Bay cruise. This is typhoon season in the north, and the majority of annual cruise cancellations fall in July and August. The weather is hot and humid, and afternoon storms can disrupt boat schedules with little warning.
Best for: travellers with fixed dates — book fully refundable cruisesTwo windows. One of them is almost always right.
October–November and March–April. Clear skies, calm water, mild temperatures and far fewer boats. If your dates are flexible, aim for one of these two.
Best time to cruise the Mekong Delta and Mekong River.
November to April is the dry season in southern Vietnam and the best time for a Mekong cruise. The weather is warm, the skies are clear, and the river is calm.
The dry season advantage
From December to April, southern Vietnam enjoys its most reliable weather. Temperatures sit in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius, rain is minimal, and the waterways are stable. If you are cruising between Saigon and Phnom Penh — or taking the longer journey to Siem Reap — this is the window to aim for.
The Mekong is a working river, and the dry season means fewer disruptions to schedules. Shore excursions to floating markets, fishing villages and riverside towns run smoothly.
November – April
The dry season. Warm, sunny, minimal rain, and the most stable water levels of the year. Both the short Saigon–Phnom Penh crossing and the full Saigon–Siem Reap journey run reliably.
Best for: all Mekong routes, floating markets, shore excursionsMay – October
Not constant rain — typically a heavy afternoon downpour that clears within an hour or two. Mornings are often clear. The upside is that the Delta is at its most photogenic, prices are lower and crowds are thinner.
Best for: photography, lower prices, thinner crowdsBest time for Central Vietnam cruises.
Central Vietnam has the most unpredictable weather in the country. February to August is the dry season, with the best conditions from February to May. September to November is the typhoon and flood season — the single biggest weather risk in Vietnam.
February – May
The sweet spot for river cruises and day boats in Central Vietnam — the Perfume River in Hue, the Thu Bon River around Hoi An. The weather is warm, the waterways are calm, and the light is beautiful.
Best for: Perfume River, Hoi An day boats, Hue and Da NangSeptember – November
The single biggest weather risk in Vietnam. Typhoons and serious flooding hit the central coast, Hoi An’s old town floods most years in October, and river-based activities are often suspended. Road access can be cut for days after a storm.
Do not schedule Central Vietnam cruises in OctoberBest time for Phu Quoc and island-hopping.
Phu Quoc sits in the Gulf of Thailand, off Vietnam’s southern coast, and its weather follows the southern dry/wet pattern rather than the northern bay cycle. November to March is the best window for calm seas and reliable boat trips.
Why the dry season matters for island-hopping
Phu Quoc and the surrounding islands — Hon Thom, Hon Mong Tay, Hon May Rut and the southern archipelago — are reached by boat. In the dry season, the sea is calm, boat schedules run reliably, and the beaches and snorkelling sites are at their best.
From May to October, the southwest monsoon brings rougher seas and frequent afternoon showers. Boat trips can be cancelled with little warning, and some island services operate on reduced schedules. If island-hopping is a priority, plan for the dry season.
November – March
The dry season. Calm seas, clear skies and reliable boat schedules. The best months for island-hopping, snorkelling, cable-car trips to Hon Thom and sunset cruises. December to February is the peak window.
Best for: island-hopping, snorkelling, boat trips, beach timeApril – October
Warmer and wetter, with the heaviest rain from June to September. The island is lush and green, prices are lower, and crowds are thinner. Boat trips are still possible on clear days, but expect occasional cancellations and rougher seas.
Best for: lower prices, lush scenery, quieter beachesOther island-hopping options
Beyond Phu Quoc, southern Vietnam has two smaller island destinations worth considering: Con Dao, a remote archipelago south of the mainland with quieter beaches and a national park, and Nam Du, a small island group in the Gulf of Thailand with a more local feel. Both follow the same dry-season logic as Phu Quoc — November to March is the most reliable window for boat access and calm seas.
In the far south, the Mekong Delta’s coastal islands — including Phu Quoc’s smaller neighbours — are best visited in the dry season too. Outside that window, ferry and boat services can be disrupted by rough weather.
Island-hopping needs calm seas.
November to March is the window. Calm water, reliable boat schedules, and the best of the beaches, snorkelling and sunset cruises.
The Tet holiday — what every cruiser should know.
Tet — Vietnamese Lunar New Year — falls in late January or early February. It is the biggest holiday in Vietnam, and it affects travel significantly.
The country pauses
Many businesses, restaurants and shops close for several days. Transport books out well in advance. Prices spike for hotels and domestic flights. The whole country is on the move visiting family.
Reduced service
Some cruise operators run reduced schedules or close entirely. Transfers from Hanoi or Saigon may be harder to arrange. The atmosphere is festive, but services shrink.
Plan well ahead
If your dates land on Tet, plan well ahead and confirm with your cruise operator that services will run. Alternatively, avoid the week entirely — cruise a week before or after Tet.
Dates shift each year
Tet follows the lunar calendar and moves each year. In 2026 it falls in mid-February. Check the exact dates for your travel year before you book.

Practical tips for timing your Vietnam cruise.
Everything we have learned about matching dates to water, from years of arranging cruises on the bays and rivers of Vietnam.
Choose your region first, then your month
Vietnam’s three climate zones do not move together. A month that is perfect for Halong Bay might be the worst month for Hoi An or Phu Quoc.
Build in flexibility for a bay cruise
Wind, rain and visibility matter more than temperature when your main activity is on the water. If your Halong Bay cruise is a highlight, give yourself a day or two of buffer in Hanoi.
Book October–November cruises 6–8 weeks ahead
This is peak season for a reason. Popular boats fill up early, especially boutique and luxury ships.
Avoid October on the central coast
If your itinerary includes Hoi An or Hue, do not plan it for October. The flood risk is real and disruptive.
Plan island-hopping for the dry season
Phu Quoc, Con Dao and the southern islands need calm seas. November to March is the reliable window — outside it, boat trips can be cancelled.
Check the Tet dates before you book
Tet falls in late January or early February. Confirm with your cruise operator that services will run during your dates.
What I tell travellers who ask me when to come.
Almost every traveller I speak to asks the same question: when is the best time to visit Vietnam? My answer is always the same — it depends on which water you want to be on.
If your dream is a Halong Bay overnight cruise, aim for October or November, or March or April. The water is calm, the sky is clear, and the light on the limestone is extraordinary. If your dream is a Mekong river journey, you want the dry season — November to April — when the river is stable and shore excursions run on schedule.
And if island-hopping in Phu Quoc is on your list, remember that calm seas matter more than sunshine. November to March is when the boats run reliably. In the wet season, the island is green and quiet — but the sea can be rough, and some trips get cancelled with little warning.
The mistake I see most often is travellers booking a northern bay cruise in July or August because those dates happen to fit their calendar. In the north, that is peak storm season, and cancellations are common. If your dates are fixed, book a fully refundable cruise and keep a day of buffer in Hanoi.
On the central coast, do not plan a Hoi An or Hue river experience for October. The flooding is real, and it can disrupt a whole week of travel. February to May is far safer.
And one last thing — if your dates land on Tet, check with your operator first. The country slows down, and some services close for the week.
