Sihanoukville: Cambodia’s premier coastal gateway.

A beach town on the Gulf of Thailand, with the laid-back sands of Otres, the lively Serendipity strip, and the island escapes of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem offshore.

About the City

A place of two faces.

Sihanoukville sits on Cambodia’s southern coast, about 230 km from Phnom Penh, on the Gulf of Thailand. Once a sleepy beach town beloved by backpackers, it has undergone dramatic change over the past decade — and today it is a place of two faces: a rapidly developing port city in the centre, and a still-beautiful coastline of beaches and islands just beyond it.

Otres Beach retains its laid-back charm. Serendipity Beach and Ochheuteal draw a livelier crowd. And offshore, Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem remain among Southeast Asia’s most beautiful undeveloped islands.

About the City

What Sihanoukville is

Sihanoukville is on Cambodia’s southern coast on the Gulf of Thailand, about 230 km from Phnom Penh, and is the capital of Preah Sihanouk Province. It is the main coastal city and administrative centre of the province. The urban core includes Serendipity Beach, Ochheuteal Beach, and the commercial centre around Golden Lions Roundabout. Otres Beach lies a few kilometres south.

Sihanoukville — originally named Kampong Som — was developed in the 1950s under King Norodom Sihanouk as Cambodia’s first deep-water port, giving the newly independent country direct access to international trade without relying on Vietnam or Thailand. During the Vietnam War era, the port became strategically important. After 1975, the Khmer Rouge briefly used Sihanoukville before the city fell into decline.

From the late 1990s and especially the 2000s, Sihanoukville became a beloved stop on the Southeast Asia backpacker trail. Since around 2016, Sihanoukville has undergone rapid, sometimes controversial development, driven largely by Chinese investment in casinos, hotels, and infrastructure. Today, Sihanoukville is best understood as a developing port and resort city where travelers choose their experience carefully.

What to See

Highlights of Sihanoukville

From the relaxed sands of Otres to the lively central beaches and the island escapes offshore, these are the places that define Sihanoukville.

Otres Beach The Most Relaxed

Otres is the most relaxed of Sihanoukville’s town beaches — a long, tree-lined stretch of sand with low-key guesthouses, beach bars, and restaurants. It has retained more of its original backpacker atmosphere than the central beaches, and remains a favourite for travelers who want sun, sea, and a slower pace.

Serendipity Beach The Social Heart

Serendipity is the social heart of Sihanoukville’s coastline — a busy strip of bars, restaurants, and small hotels, popular for sunset drinks and evening seafood. It connects to Ochheuteal Beach, which offers a long stretch of sand with a similar mix of dining and nightlife.

Koh Rong Cambodia’s Best-Known Island

Koh Rong is a large, mostly undeveloped landmass with white-sand beaches, clear water, and a lively backpacker scene around Koh Tuch village. Long Set Beach offers a quieter alternative, and night swimming with bioluminescent plankton is a memorable experience.

Koh Rong Sanloem The Quieter Sister

Koh Rong Sanloem is Koh Rong’s quieter neighbour, popular with honeymooners, divers, and travelers seeking calm. Saracen Bay is the main beach, with a growing cluster of small resorts and guesthouses. Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach offer quieter alternatives.

Ochheuteal Beach The Longest Central Beach

Ochheuteal is Sihanoukville’s longest central beach, with a row of seafood shacks, beach bars, and water sports operators along its length. It is family-friendly in the daytime and lively after dark.

Ream National Park Wild Coast

Ream National Park offers a wilder side of Cambodia’s coast — mangroves, beaches, and forest just 20 km from Sihanoukville. The park encompasses 21,000 hectares of mangrove forests, coastal beaches, coral reefs, and evergreen forest. Boat trips through the mangrove channels are a popular way to see the park.

Visiting

Best time to visit Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville is warm year-round, but the coastal seasons are more pronounced than elsewhere in Cambodia. The dry season from November to March is the best time for beach days and island trips.

November – March Dry & Pleasant · Best

Clear skies, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures. The best time for beach days, island trips, and diving. This is the peak season, so book accommodation and ferries in advance.

April – May Hot & Dry

Hot and humid, but with calm seas and fewer crowds. Beach time is best in the morning and late afternoon. A good time for those who don’t mind the heat.

June – October Green Season · Rainy

Heavy afternoon rains, rougher seas, and lush scenery. Ferries to the islands can be cancelled in rough seas. Lower prices and quieter beaches. Build flexibility into island plans.

Year-round Always Something On

Sihanoukville is a year-round destination. The city’s beaches, markets, and national park are open throughout the year. The Sea Festival usually rotates between coastal provinces in December.
