A traveller might spend the first night in Hanoi, break the trip in Hoi An, and finish in Ho Chi Minh City. Those city stays often set the tone for everything in between. How the country feels. How the journey flows. How much energy is left for what comes next.
A good city hotel is not just a room inside a city. It is a question of location, neighbourhood, architecture and atmosphere, and how easily the hotel lets you step out into the streets around it. This page is our guide to that choice across Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
A city hotel is only as good as its address. We include hotels because of what surrounds them, not just what is inside them.
Before choosing a hotel, it helps to know what kind of city location suits you, and what each kind actually gives you.
Close to the main sights, restaurants and transport. Usually the easiest choice for a first visit.
Old quarters, heritage streets and neighbourhoods that still work the way they always have. Strong sense of place.
On the Saigon River, the Mekong or the Perfume River. Quieter mornings, wider views.
Efficient, well-connected and modern. Best for travellers who need meetings, Wi-Fi and quick transport.
A few streets back from the noise, with cafés, local restaurants and a calmer pace to come home to.
Convenient and lively, with easy access to tours, restaurants and nightlife. Can be noisier at night.
Where the streets around the hotel are pleasant on foot. A real advantage in dense Asian cities.
A specific anchor. A lake, a market, a temple, a riverside promenade, that shapes the daily rhythm.
The best location depends on the traveller. A first-time visitor usually wants easy access to the main sights. A returning traveller may prefer a local neighbourhood. A business traveller may need transport and a district close to meetings. A family often wants larger rooms and quieter surroundings. A couple may prefer atmosphere, design and walkability. Location is a match, not a ranking.

A couple, a family, a first-time visitor and a business traveller should not be choosing the same hotel, even in the same city.
Boutique atmosphere, romantic settings, rooftop restaurants, historic architecture, river views and streets made for walking.
Family rooms, connecting rooms, pools, a reliable breakfast, a central location and easy transport.
A central location close to the main sights, easy to navigate, with local restaurants and pleasant walks nearby.
Five-star service, suites, fine dining, spas, heritage buildings and distinctive design.
Room size, a good neighbourhood, laundry, in-house dining and easy transport around the city.
Location, reliable Wi-Fi, a workspace in the room, meeting rooms, airport access and good restaurants.
In dense Asian cities, the neighbourhood often matters more than the hotel itself. Two hotels five minutes apart can feel like different cities.
Some travellers choose a hotel because of what is right outside the door. A market, a river, a temple, a station, a neighbourhood to wander.
Many travellers mix a city hotel with a beach resort, a heritage stay or a riverside property within the same journey.
Historic buildings, restored homes and old landmarks that still carry the story of the city they stand in.

View Hotel Profile →We look at city hotels through nine lenses. Not to grade them, but to understand who each one is right for. The hotel that suits a family on a two-week journey may not suit a couple on a three-night stop, and that is exactly the point.
Explore Hotel ProfilesA hotel is usually only one part of a larger journey. The best hotel for a city depends on where it sits in the rhythm of the trip.
Each stop asks for a different kind of hotel. A city hotel for the first nights in Hanoi, a small riverside stay in Hoi An, and a central Saigon base before the Mekong. The hotels should match the pace and the purpose of each city, not be chosen on their own.
This is where we work differently from a hotel directory. We plan hotels as part of the whole journey, alongside transfers, guides, cruises, experiences and multi-country routing. If a hotel does not fit the itinerary, we say so.

Work With Asia Travel MatesAsia Travel Mates works with city hotels across Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. If your hotel is well placed, well run and gives travellers something genuinely useful, a great location, a strong breakfast, a real sense of the city, we would like to know more about it.
We are especially interested in hotels where the neighbourhood does some of the work, where the streets around the hotel are part of why guests enjoy staying there.
Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An are the strongest city hotel destinations in Vietnam, and each has its own character. Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Da Lat add variety, and Can Tho is a lovely base for the Mekong Delta.
The Old Quarter suits travellers who want to be in the middle of everything. Hoan Kiem and the French Quarter are quieter and more elegant. West Lake is calm and residential, and Ba Dinh is close to the city’s historic landmarks.
District 1 is the easiest choice for a first visit, close to the main sights. District 3 is quieter and more local. Thao Dien works well for longer stays, and District 5 around Cholon has a very different, more traditional feel.
Not always. Boutique hotels tend to have more character and a stronger sense of place. Larger hotels often have more facilities and more consistency. The right choice depends on the traveller and the trip.
Family-friendly city hotels usually have larger rooms or connecting rooms, a pool, a good breakfast, and easy access to markets, restaurants and sights without long drives. We can suggest a few based on the ages of your children and the pace of the trip.
