A heritage hotel does something a new hotel cannot. It puts you inside a building that has already lived through the city around it. A colonial-era hotel in Hanoi, a royal residence in Luang Prabang, a merchant shophouse in Hoi An, a landmark property in Phnom Penh.
This collection gathers the historic properties across Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos that we believe are worth staying in for more than nostalgia. Hotels where the architecture, the original details and the sense of the past are matched by real comfort today. From grand colonial landmarks to small restored houses, each one carries a story that belongs to its city.
We separate genuine heritage from heritage styling. A hotel belongs in this collection when the history is real, not just in the photographs.
Not every old building qualifies as a heritage hotel. These are the qualities we look for when we include a property in this collection.
The building has a history we can verify. A construction date, an original use, a documented owner or resident.
Original staircases, tiling, ironwork, shutters, courtyards or facades that survive into the present.
The building has been looked after rather than rebuilt. Modern additions are quietly integrated.
The building belongs to its city. You can read the destination through the hotel itself.
Air conditioning, good bathrooms, soundproofing and reliable Wi-Fi. Character does not mean compromise.
No two rooms are quite the same. Heritage hotels always have their own internal geography.
Lobbies, courtyards, bars and gardens that still feel like the rooms they originally were.
The best heritage hotels look after the building for the next century, not just the next season.
A colonial-era landmark, a former royal residence, a restored merchant house and a riverfront historic hotel each give a different stay.

We are especially interested in properties where the history is real, and where the guest experience has been brought up to modern standards without erasing what came before.
Staying in a historic building changes how a traveller reads the city around it.
A colonial-era hotel in Hanoi or a Lao-French house in Luang Prabang explains the city’s layers in a way no museum quite does.
Most heritage hotels sit inside the historic quarters, which is usually exactly where travellers want to be at the start and end of the day.
Older buildings slow the stay down. High ceilings, courtyards, verandas and shuttered windows invite a quieter rhythm than a modern tower.
In our collection, a heritage hotel is a property with genuine historical fabric or lineage. A colonial-era building, a restored merchant shophouse, a former royal or government residence, or a landmark with a documented past. Design-only pastiche does not qualify.
The best ones are. We look for properties where the historic character has been preserved alongside reliable comfort, with soundproofing, air conditioning, good bathrooms, Wi-Fi and service standards that suit contemporary travellers.
Hanoi, Hue and Hoi An lead in Vietnam. Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are the key heritage cities in Cambodia. In Laos, Luang Prabang and Vientiane hold most of the country’s historic properties.
